Enriching education

Setting itself apart from other schools in the area, St John’s has the ability to provide unparalleled access to education in other countries.

As part of the IES group of schools, many of the pupils at St John’s have studied for half a term or longer at one of its sister schools in South Africa, Florida, Hungary, Spain or Italy and have taken part in the annual inter-school competitions which, in recent years, have taken place in Ecuador, Costa Rica and Guadalajara! Pupils at St John’s have the opportunity to be able to experience different communities and cultures, further enriching their school education and giving them a true international outlook.

As well as its worldwide connections, the school has an outstanding academic record…”

As well as its worldwide connections, the school has an outstanding academic record, being placed 15th nationally in the Sunday Times Parent Power Guide and continuing that record in 2017 with 100% of pupils achieving over five GCSE qualifications at A* to C. Now that’s something to shout about!

The school is local and independent, providing an all-through education for boys and girls aged two and up. It offers a broad curriculum with a strong emphasis on bringing out the very best in its 200 day-students and 50 boarders, all from more than 12 different countries.

St John’s has a rich tradition and a proud heritage, situated on the same site, overlooking the sea at Sidmouth since 1914. As well as its proud past, the school also has a vibrant and exciting future, and the staff look forward to sharing it with you. They invite parents and pupils to come in during the school day to allow them time to have meaningful discussions about your son or daughter, as opposed to holding the regular ‘open mornings’. What’s more, the school also holds an annual Amaze Me Day, Saturday 9th June, for any local children from nursery to Year 9. This is a great opportunity for local children to experience the facilities and get involved in some fantastic activities including pool kayaking, balance biking, dance, drama, coding and cooking. There are also workshops in which parents can join: Paediatric First Aid and Nutrition for children.

During the summer, the school also runs a highly successful summer programme in which a range of activity based day camp options are offered.

St John’s welcomes local pupils to the school, and offers local fees to those living within 15 miles of the school postcode, as defined by Google Maps. It also encourages students from their very first day to travel far beyond the realms of locality, setting them up for a lifetime of adventure.
