We catch up with Mark, Director of Beacon Electrical, and learn a little more about this incredible local business.

In today’s world, global chains and online superstores are able to dominate the market by sheer size and undercutting the local speciality stores of days gone by. So, it’s hard not to be impressed when a local business manages to hold its own and actually beat the competition. These underdog stories really do warm the heart, and there’s something to be said for handing over your hard earned cash for home wares, knowing that it’s being injected straight back into the local economy and not making it’s way to a central accounts department that may not even be in the same country!

Introducing Beacon Electrical. Based in Plymouth and second-generation family-run, this fantastic local company has been established for over 40 years, with five shops in the Plymouth and south Devon region.

Back in the 1970s and early 80s, company Director Mark tells us: “We were originally known for supplying house-wiring and lighting supplies to the keen DIYer and trade customers. But since then, we have continually expanded our offering to include a wide range of heating, decorative lighting, white goods like washing machines and fridges, and small domestic appliances.” Fast forward to present day and Beacon Electrical has become a fantastic local alternative to national giants like B&Q, Currys and Argos, for all types of electrical products, while still offering professional advice, friendly service and, most importantly, unbeatable prices!

There are five branches in total – two in Plymouth, plus stores in Plymstock, Totnes and Kingsbridge and there’s even a sister company, Beacon Blinds, with an excellent showroom displaying all the latest designs and fabrics.

Mark continues: “Each branch has its own identity and a tailored range of products to suit the demands of the local community. For example, the south Devon town stores in Totnes and Kingsbridge also stock a great range of top-of-the-range technology, including televisions and audio products from the likes of Samsung, Sony, Sonos and many others. We are the largest independent supplier of these goods in Devon and are going from strength to strength,” and credit for this can be given to the unbeatable combination of professional advice and the lowest prices.

“But the key is that we can order in any model from any manufacturer by special order, supplying the best possible products to suit each of our customers’ needs.”

If so, Beacon Electrical has a wealth of heating products available, “from £9.99 portable halogen heaters, to storage heaters and fantastically realistic flame-effect electric fires. We can advise on which type of heaters are best for each situation, and are able to work in tandem with reliable local tradesmen to offer a full service, from consultation to fitting.” In fact, this fitting service extends to much of the Beacon service and is inclusive of kitchen appliances and TV products too!
